Lorne has been active on various committees and events in support of the Great Trail since early 2000. He is an active PMBIA mountain bike coach and a retired Speech-Language Pathologist. He has been a Type 1, insulin dependent diabetic since 1997, following a case of pnemonia.
He and his family cycled through Europe in 1997-98. On his return, he thought that he’s cycled so many countries and yet not his own, Canada. It has been on his bucket list since. This year he has committed to going from Mile 0 in St. John’s, Newfoundland to Mile 0 in Victoria, British Columbia
During his trip planning a new glucose monitor (CGM – Constant Glucose Monitor) came available in Canada from Abbott, The Freestyle Libre which he quickly investigated, visited his Doctor for a review of the new technology. Within the week he had purchased one and has found his glucose levels much easier to test and more controlled within the correct levels.
While working as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the school system, he found dealing with diabetes and the intensity of the job too complicated to deal with, experiencing the constant high and lows with bouts of unconsciousness. He moved on and has cycled numerous countries since. A comment that he has heard consistently with folks dealing with diabetes “I can’t or So & So (spouses or friends) can’t cycle any longer because they’ve come down with Diabetes. Lorne feels he controls his diabetes with constant exercise and cycling.
His dedication to the Solo trip across Canada from East to West is to help inspire diabetics to take control of their condition and move. Enjoy life “Those who have a Why to live for, can always find a How.”
Those dealing with Diabetes, I would really appreciate your input into this blog. Many diabetics are active and enjoying life, Let’s share it.
